Best Air Purifiers for a Nursery & Family Home (2026)

White air purifier beside a crib in a sunny nursery

Cooking smoke, dust, pet dander, wildfire season: there are lots of reasons parents look at air purifiers. Here's how we'd choose one for a nursery or family room without overspending.

Indoor air can contain fine particles from cooking, dust and smoke. The EPA notes that portable air cleaners with HEPA filters can reduce airborne particles in a room. They aren't magic, and they're not a substitute for ventilation (open a window, run your range hood), but a good one is a nice tool, especially during wildfire smoke days.

What actually matters

Skip ozone generators

Avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone, sometimes sold as "air purifiers" or "ionizers" for odor. Both the EPA and California's Air Resources Board warn that ozone is a lung irritant. Some HEPA purifiers include an optional ionizer feature; most let you switch it off, and we'd run a nursery purifier HEPA-only. California certifies air cleaners for low ozone emissions; you can look up models on CARB's list.

FAQ

What size air purifier do I need for a room?

Check the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). The EPA's rule of thumb for smoke is a CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's square footage. Size up so you can run it on a quieter setting.

Is HEPA-type the same as true HEPA?

No. HEPA-type or HEPA-like filters aren't the same as a true HEPA filter. The EPA notes that portable air cleaners with HEPA filters can reduce airborne particles in a room.

Are ionizers and ozone air purifiers safe for a nursery?

Avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone. Both the EPA and California's Air Resources Board warn that ozone is a lung irritant. If a HEPA purifier has an optional ionizer, we'd switch it off and run a nursery purifier HEPA-only.

Where should an air purifier go in a nursery?

Keep it a few feet from the crib with the cord out of reach and secured, don't put it where a climbing toddler can use it as a step, and leave space around the intake and outlet.
